"Cliché is not in their lexicon." (Dean Sewell, photographer)
brokenbench is a partnership of photographers that supports personal and individual approaches to documentary photography. brokenbench photographers share a strong belief that diversity within the medium is vital in stimulating and encouraging personal ways of looking at the world. brokenbench aims to promote its member photographers through online galleries at brokenbench.com.au, as well as through commissions, publications and exhibitions.
brokenbench derives its name from a photograph made in 1962 by Hungarian photographer André Kertész. Kertész made this particular photograph of a broken bench while visiting a family friend who had been admitted to a mental hospital in Brooklyn, New York. Kertész's pioneering and independent style of documentary photography has influenced many of the world's most highly regarded photographers. His work stands as a testament to the strength of personal vision within the medium.
"We all owe something to Kertész." Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Galleries displayed at brokenbench.com.au are independently curated by each photographer. brokenbench photographers may be available for commissioned work.
